Vincent Van Gogh was known for creating some of the most eye-catching art the world has ever seen. The Nerdrwriter takes a look at his worst piece in this video and tells us that there’s more than meets the eye in this off-putting painting.

Van Gogh set out to create a terrible work of art with Night Cafe. In a letter to his brother, he spoke about how he wanted to create an ugly painting. By using clashing colours and awkward imagery, Van Gogh takes the viewer into an odd and frustrating world.

The painting itself doesn’t instill a sense of fear or worry into the viewer, more so a feeling of unease and confusion, the exact opposite of what “good art” should do. But The Nerdwriter tells us that this is exactly Van Gogh’s intention. To pull the rug from under us and create an artwork that challenges and frustrates the viewer, brilliantly flipping the whole idea of a “good” work of art on its head.
