This years famous Met Gala saw celebrities from all over the globe doll themselves up in amazing, extravagant costumes. The theme of the gala this year was “camp”. But lots of people (attendees included!) were a little confused on what exactly camp is.


The Met themselves explain just what camp is in this charming video. The word’s origins go all the way back to the 17th century, where it was used to describe goofy, over the top and pompous behaviour. Later on, it became a word that meant over the top style and became a popular word amongst LGBT people, even all the way back in the Victorian era.

Oscar Wilde was credited as fleshing out this idea, embodying many of the word’s key elements in his style and look. The word’s meaning has shifted over the years and is open to interpretation. But, looking at the outfits at this years Met Gala, it’s clear that the word’s link to the over the top fashion and LGBT fashion is still as strong as ever.
