The trailer for the live-action version of the stage play Cats dropped this week and the reaction has been mixed to say the least.
This trailer shows us the glossy CGI and the star-studded cast of the film. The credits include big names like Judi Dench, Taylor Swift and James Corden, to name a few. The directing team behind this also brought us the critically-acclaimed Les Miserables and The King’s Speech films. But some people online reckon that Cats might be a bit of a misstep. The play is loved for its stunning costumes and brilliant songs, but this trailer shows us that the elements that make the play great might not translate to the big screen.
A lot of people online and on Twitter are commenting that the cats look a little strange and that they fall into the “uncanny valley”. Not quite human, but not quite cat either. Questions have also been raised about the size of the cats (they look tiny!) as well as questions about what the situation is with clothing. It’s an ambitious trailer, but did it miss the mark? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
