Nintendo featured this nostalgic trailer for the game 198X by indy developers Hi-Bit Studios.

Set in the stunning cityscape of 1980s Tokyo, this mysterious game follows one young protagonist, as he searches for the meaning of life through classic video games. The game has an overarching story that’s told through cutscenes and various arcade-style games. You get to play gloomier versions of the classics Shinobi, Streets Of Rage, R-Type and Outrun. The homages are excellent reimaginings of these much-loved titles.

The whole thing is animated using a beautiful 8 bit art style. It’s an impressive feat to make such stunning landscapes with so few resources. It’s the latest piece of work to celebrate the old-school aesthetic of 80s video games. It’s a love letter to the games of years gone by. In recent years, there’s been a revived interest in arcade games and old titles. Could this release spark a bigger nostalgia revolution? Could we see more like 198X in the future? Let us know what you think down in the comments.
