Adut Akech, Palomo Elsesser and Anok Yai describe the tough challenges that models face in the industry today.

Although modelling looks like a glossy job to outsiders, it can actually be much harder than people realise. It can be super competitive and making a living based off your looks can be a mentally draining experience. Many don’t stay in it long due to the intense pressures that come with carrying campaigns and representing huge brands.

The industry is moving to be more inclusive, but many larger or BAME models can often feel pushed out. On the flip side of things, they can also feel tokenised and feel like they can’t be more than their size or their colour. But all of them do also say it is a super rewarding job. Those of them who come from tough backgrounds, poorer countries or challenging environments see themselves as role models for young girls. It’s a revealing video that gives us a deeper insight into modelling and what it takes to make it in that world. Let us know your thoughts on the video in the comments below.
