Dutch captain and Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk takes Nike to his hometown of Breda in The Netherlands in this video.
The centre back has risen up from his humble beginnings to become one of the best players in the world. He broke the record for the highest transfer fee for a defender in 2017, when he was bought for 72 million pounds by Liverpool. On top of that, he’s almost won the coveted Ballon d’Or award and has lifted a Champions League trophy.
In this video, Virgil goes back to his roots and tells us how he first got started in football. He recalls how the “winner stays on” 5-a-sides he used to play sparked his competitive spirit. Despite being an incredible player now, Virgil tells us how he almost was dropped from club academy teams and struggled to find his feet initially. He doubted himself and even considered giving up. But, he says that through a lot of determination, he was able to break into first teams and eventually made his way to the Premier League. The rest is history.
