The Great Big Story meets Venice’s last remaining gondola makers. The city was once known for having some of the best boat builders in the world, but today, only a few gondola makers remain with most of them being small family-run businesses.

The costs of manufacturing the extravagant boats put a lot of people off, but Renata Tramontin still runs her family business of boat-making. Her family have been doing it for over 125 years and have perfected the art.

It’s a painstaking process, often taking months to make just one boat. But anyone who’s been to the famous water-city know that they are a quintessential part of the landscape. It’s fascinating to see all of the work that goes in to creating the amazing gondolas that dominate Venice’s waterways.
