In the days of Tinder, Bumble, Hinge and even Christian Mingle, it’s easy to forget that people have been looking for love in weird places for a long time. This short documentary from Great Big Story looks into the history of Der Bräutigamseiche – an oak tree in Northern Germany which has been bringing together potential partners for over a century.

Beginning when a forest ranger’s daughter and a chocolate maker’s son used a hole in the tree to pass letters between each other without their parents knowing, the tree’s reputation of bringing together suitors has led to people from around the world posting notes to it. The documentary features an interview with Karl-Heinz Martens, who was mailman to the tree for over 30 years and met his wife through its letter exchange.
