“Apart” is an animated short film by Diana Cam Van Nguyen that looks at the story of three young people grappling with the loss of a loved one.
In the film, we hear the story of one young woman who lost her father during a car accident whilst she was in the vehicle. Another young man tells us how his mother took her own life after suffering from severe chronic pain and we also hear how another young man lost his father due to a terminal illness. They tell the viewer how difficult it was to cope and how tough it is to suffer such a impactful loss at a young age. They each tell us how they found ways to cope and eventually could move on with their lives. The film points out how losing a parental figure in your teens can be especially difficult.
The animation style blends elements of live action with 2D drawings, which gives it a realistic and hard hitting style. The film shows us how experiencing loss like this can be incredibly emotional and can also make a person feel distant and separated from society.
