NOWNESS brings us this powerful doc where they meet the South Shore Drill Team. The community-run dance group looks to empower young people in impoverished areas of Chicago and give them a new lease of life.

For a lot of the young people who are a part of this group, their lives are fractured, disorganised and unstable. Drill dance is the perfect solution to their problems. The style of dancing requires participants to learn intricate and complicated routines and then perform them in unison with other people. The bonds formed in these groups are extremely strong, as the style of dance requires a massive amount of team work.

In this doc, we meet some of the organisers of this specific group as well as some of the people who it helps. It’s a moving story that shows us just how important community and companionship is for people who are living in this area. When everything else is crumbling around them, they can turn to this group for solace and support.
