Studio Gnarly Bay made this short film about an inspiring artist who creates artworks using nothing but trash.
Thomas Deininger is angry. He’s annoyed about the sheer scale of plastic waste in the world. Worse still, the massive long-term impact of plastic waste is fuelled mostly by single-use plastics. They get used just the once and then they’re thrown away, left to sit on the Earth for thousands of years. So Thomas decided to start creating large, complex artworks out of these discarded plastics.

At a distance, Thomas’ pieces resemble animals, which are often from species who are badly affected by plastic pollution. Up close, his artworks are pretty chaotic, made up of a huge blend of waste. Thomas says that looking up close reveals the range of waste we produce and reminds us of the chaos and scale of the plastic pollution problem. It’s an eye-opening video that reminds us of the issue of waste in the world and shows us that something good can come out of a bad situation. Thomas has a uniquely blunt way of summing up the crisis that we’re in, which is both scary and funny at the same time.
