The Ratio

3D artist Tomasz Dabert’s short video The Ratio is an exquisite-looking experiment with material simulations and colours. What began as a commercial which was then cancelled, Dabert finished the project anyway just to see what could be achieved, and the result is a highly-stylised and hypnotic blend of particle effects, rigid-body simulations and explosive coffee beans. Beginning with a densely packed shot of these colour-coded beans being slowly mixed together, the short progresses into a super-slow-motion collision between two beans, exploding in a burst of black, white and gold. The whole thing looks like some kind of giant space battle, and the end result looks so sharp it makes us wince even thinking about the render times that must have been involved…
