All these rappers these days going on about “makin’ paper”, they ain’t got nuthin’ on Gangolf Ulbricht, the subject of this short documentary The Papermaker. Ulbricht is one of the last people in Europe handcrafting paper using techniques he has picked up in Germany, Japan, France and England. The work looks extremely messy but satisfying, as we are shown the processes he puts into each sheet, from turning old scraps of paper into pulp that is then re-used, to adding pigments and watermarks for paper to be used in legal documents. He talks about what it is about handmade paper that he finds so attractive, and why he thinks his passion will make a comeback in terms of the way people want to invest in novel ways of gathering their paper.
