Great Big Story and Genesis show us this interesting documentary that looks into the ancient sport of water jousting.

In the stunning harbour city of Sete in France, oarsmen have been facing off in a unique way for over four hundred years. In the 1600s, in this city the sport of water jousting was invented. But how does it work? Two jousters stand on top of a boat with a long jousting spear and a shield. A team of rowers propel them towards their opponent. Then, the first one to knock the other person into the water wins.

The sport is only played in this city, but the annual jousting tournament is a really huge event. It attracts hundreds of attendees each and every year, who are all eager to see who’ll come out on top and take home 1st prize. In this doc, we get to meet Robert Bancilhon, who learnt how to play the sport from his father. He’s carrying on the tradition, as he’s training his son in the sport as well. It’s a fascinating short doc that takes us inside one of the world’s weirdest pastimes.
