What do you get when Taika Waititi, the director of Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Jojo Rabbit, and Thor Ragnarok, makes a Coca-Cola advert? One of the best Christmas adverts in recent years, that’s what.
The short film tells the story about a father on an epic quest to deliver his daughter’s letter to Santa Claus. And there’s a lot to love about this Cocoa-Cola Christmas advert.
Firstly: there’s no dialogue. A perfectly wordless story, told with visuals only. What language do they speak? Where are they? Doesn’t matter.
Secondly: the production. It’s a full-on epic adventure, with multiple locations, countries and landscapes, like a full-length feature film boiled down into two and a half minutes.
Thirdly: the sentiment. It’s a beautiful story that doesn’t have all the usual glitz and schmaltz of Christmas adverts.
So what do you think of the Coca-Cola Christmas advert this year? We think it’s brilliant, and one of the best ones out there.
