TED-Ed show us this stunning animation that explores the beauty of accents. Each different accent defines who we are and can tell people a lot about our personality.

When people move to a new area, sometimes they try and copy the local accent so that they can blend in with the crowd. But some people go in the opposite direction. The poem in the animation tells the story of the narrators mother, who kept her strong Latin-American accent even after living in the US for a number of years.

She talks about why her mother kept her accent over the years and what it meant to her. She tells us how it gave her mother a connection to home; that every time she spoke, she connected her American life with her Latin-American life. It’s a lovely story that reminds us the importance of being true to yourself. It tells us not to compromise who we are just to fit in and that we should be proud of our heritage.
