Author Laurie Lindeen narrates this stop-motion short film called Slinging Hash that shows us the tougher side to the music industry.

The film uses a mix of stop-motion and animation techniques to take us inside of a dead-end diner. This is where Laurie worked day-in-day-out as a waitress to fund her all-girl Rock band Zuzu’s Petals. Her job is pretty monotonous and there are no prospects of getting out. When she wasn’t working, she did gigs with her band. Whilst at work, her boss told her that there was someone on the phone from a popular music magazine, who was asking for an interview.

She did the interview over the phone whilst she was at work and her band were given the single of the week award in the next issue of the mag. It was a big honour, but Laurie felt a little confused. She wondered how she could be given this accolade but still had to stay at the same old job regardless. It’s in that moment when she realised that the rags to riches story that she’d heard her musical heroes talk about so often wasn’t quite what she had imagined.
