This documentary from NOWNESS is a brutal and unflinching look into an annual sporting event in the town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire. In a tradition that dates back nearly 900 years, the entire town is divided into two teams of Up’ards and Down’ards, which team you are on being decided by which side of the river you were born on. Over the course of two days, the two teams (which number in the thousands) wrestle to get a ball to one of two goals that are more than three miles away from each other, resulting in incredible scenes of scrums and battles as people wrestle through the mud for hours at a time.
