The RSPB use stunning shadow puppetry in this moving appeal. In it, we see birds recreated by the shadows of people’s hands. We see two birds flying around looking for food in a peaceful field.

Then, we see two eggs hatching, with two cute little baby birds poking out of the nest. The mother bird gets some food to feed them, but sadly, she can’t find enough for both of them. The bird searches for more food, but can’t find any anywhere. Tragically, both the little birds don’t survive, as they go too long without any nourishment.

The appeal shows us in a really unique way how bird populations in the UK are rapidly on the decline. Due to Britain becoming more and more urbanised, food sources for wild birds are drying up. The use of shadow puppets is really beautiful, but the point it makes is incredibly sad and poignant. There are no real birds, in this appeal, only hands belonging to humans. The future of birds in the UK is in human hands now and the appeal points out it’s up to us to save our wildlife from extinction.
