If you worked in the Pokemon Go marketing team and you wanted someone to direct your advert, who would you choose? Someone with a history of making adverts for kids’ brands and video games? Or one of the biggest directors on the planet at the moment, Rian Johnson?

Yeah, I’d go for Johnson, too. Smart choice. The director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Knives Out teamed up with Niantic and Game Freak to direct this smart, fun commercial for the mobile game Pokemon Go.

It’s a special commercial released ahead of the international Pokemon Go Fest and features a wide cast of people tearing apart their worlds to discover Pokemon hidden underneath. The ages of the cast vary wildly, hitting Pokemon Go’s strategy to appeal to everyone – not just children.

So why do you think Rian Johnson chose to direct this commercial? In a statement, Johnson said:

“Pokémon Go has kept me engaged with my friends remotely as I’ve been practicing physical distancing these past few months. As a longtime Pokémon trainer, it was a real pleasure working with Niantic on this spot. It was a new experience for me to direct a production remotely, and I enjoyed the highly collaborative process and think we put together a fun and upbeat commercial that fans will enjoy.”

That’s right. Like many recent productions, the director wasn’t even on location. The production team were in New Zealand and Johnson was directing remotely from Los Angeles. This also ties into the Pokemon Go Fest being held entirely online this year, and gives us a peek at how filmmaking might evolve in the future.
