Tommy Delago was one of the first people to fall in love with snowboarding in Europe. He read about surfers and skateboarders in the States and desperately wanted to try it for himself. Unfortunately for him, he lived in Bavaria, a snowy, landlocked area in southern Germany. Needless to say it wasn’t exactly ideal for surfing.
Undeterred, Tommy looked to the slopes to get his thrills. In the late 1970s, he modded his own snowboard out of a single cross country ski. Then, he managed to actually order one from America and was the first person in Europe to own a professional snowboard.
Being a fan from such an early point, Tommy knew snowboards better than anyone else. After being a pro rider in the 80s, he set up Nitro Snowboards, which went on to be one of the most popular and successful snowboard brands in the world. It’s an awesome short video that gives us an insight into the early origins of snowboarding and tells us how a few fans took the sport to new heights.
