Science Insider tells us how racoons are taking over US cities. Despite millions of dollars being spent on keep the critters out of urban areas, they’re coming into cities in bigger numbers than ever before.


They’re extraordinarily resourceful creatures and have the ability to eat almost anything in order to survive. They’re incredible at reproducing as well, with female racoons becoming fertile at as young as 1 year old. This animation looks at just how the so called “trash-pandas” first came to North American towns and cities and what people are doing to drive them out.

It also explains the damage that racoons can do to both human health and the buildings that they live in. Racoons are notorious for spreading diseases and, in some cases, can even give people rabies. They’re also known for tearing up wall insulation and electrical wires. All in all, the animation’s predictions are pretty scary! The racoon revolution is here and they’re not going anywhere soon!
