This documentary explores a strange corner of the American legal system that not many are aware of – as part of a defence case lawyers are permitted to show short films to mitigate the severity of a guilty plea’s sentence, that try to show the defendant in a better light to the judge. The documentary follows the main speaker at a conference/award show for lawyers who makes these films, as he explains the techniques they use to inspire empathy and compassion from judges, such as showing pictures of the defendant as a child or picking appropriate music to pull at the heartstrings.
