Nike meets GumboFit, the running group that supports African-American communities in Chicago.

The founders of the group wanted to present the city of Chicago with a positive image of people of colour. In a city with a deep history of segregation and current issues with representation, GumboFit wanted to create a group that would make black people more visible to the wider Chicago population. They always run in a large group, in part to show passers-by a positive example of black community.

It also serves another purpose, which is to foster positive feelings about the black community in Chicago amongst black people themselves. It’s a place for people to come and support each other and help each other out. It’s a great short doc from Nike that reminds us of the power of community and how just a few small actions can massively change perceptions. The group does an excellent job of bringing people together in the city and is a great example of people championing each other in the face of adversity.
