Nike meets Bobby Kasanga, a reformed criminal who set up the community football team Hackney Wick FC.
Hackney is one of the only boroughs in London without a significant football team. In a city that’s filled with top-quality sides, it felt wrong that such an important borough should miss out. Considering the fact that the famous Hackney Marshes is a hotspot for amateur football fields, many locals felt like the district deserved its own footy team. Bobby was a local to the area and wanted to make a positive impact in his community after being released from prison in 2015.
Before prison, Bobby had been pursuing a promising career in lower-league football. He had passed his peak when he was finally released. As a result, he wanted to make sure others wouldn’t miss out the same way that he did. He founded Hackney Wick FC in 2015 and made sure that it focused on local talent from the area. The team is about more than just football, Bobby mentors each of his players and makes sure that they don’t become embroiled in a life of crime off the pitch.
