We all know that smoking is bad for you. But did you know that it is also bad for the planet? National Geographic shows us the ways in which cigarettes are damaging the environment.

It’s not the actual of smoking that’s doing the damage to our planet, it’s the litter that the cigarettes create. Almost all other forms of littering are considered somewhat taboo now. You wouldn’t toss a water bottle into the road or throw your plastic bag down the the street. But for some reason, flicking  the end of a cigarette away when you’re done with it is totally common.

But that finished cig contains plastic. Cigarette filters are actually the most littered plastic item in the world. In this short doc, we find out about the massive impact that litter created from smoking has on the environment and what we can do to try and help. But getting people to stop littering cigarette filters is a tough challenge, as in America alone over 16 million cigarettes are produced per day. The doc says that we need to have a cultural shift in how we think about waste from cigarettes if we want to stop this problem from getting way worse.
