Pier Pressure is an unusual ultras group. Die-hard football fans of massive clubs like Manchester United, Dortmund and PSG are renowned for their huge displays, earth-shaking chants and unbridled love for their sides. But lowly Eastbourne Town could rival some of Europe’s finest.
The team sit 8 leagues below the Premiership but attract a decent following each game. Inspired by bigger ultra groups a few true fans picked up a drum, bought a few flares and brought Champions League passion to drizzly Saturday matches. They quickly grew in number and more and more people turned up to watch their little team compete. Soon enough they’d earned a reputation as having some of the best non-league supporters in Britain.
It’s a charming doc from COPA90 that proves that in a world of advertising, sponsorships and thousand pound season tickets, there’s still a vibrant community of fans who are there just for the love of the game. For fans on the south east coast, the only top flight team about is Brighton, so it’s nice for Sussex locals to have another team to turn to as well. Who knows, maybe one day they’ll rise up and take the title of the big dogs of the seaside from Brighton.
