The composer behind the iconic Champions League anthem speaks to Joe.com in this brilliant interview.

For those who don’t know, in 1992 football’s European cup competition, The Champions League, adopted a song that was to be played at the start of each match. It’s not dissimilar to how countries both sing their national anthems at the start of international games. Over time the anthemic song gained a cult status, becoming a favourite feature of the build up to each game.

In this interview, we hear from Tony Britten who wrote the anthem. He tells us how he was surprised to see how popular it became and how he was proud to be part of footballing history. He says that when he was making it, he wanted to create a song that would celebrate the best of football and leave the days of violence and hooliganism in the past. It’s a fascinating insight into one of the most iconic sporting anthems in the world. Although it isn’t a pop song, Tony’s track has probably been heard millions of time over the years.
