The Londonist meets the renters who are living in an abandoned hospital to save money.

As part of the Live-In Guardians scheme, people can rent out rooms in buildings that are in the process of being sold for much lower prices than the market average. The idea hopes to stop vandals and squatters whilst also helping out people who might be struggling to afford the capital’s high rent costs. The Steel’s Lane Health Centre in Shadwell has been out of use for years now. Its future is uncertain, as the council looks to get rid of this listed building.

We meet one of the tenants of the building. About 40 people live here and come from a range of different backgrounds. The tenant says that his accommodation is unusual, but it’s proximity to central London and its extremely low cost makes it worth it. It’s an interesting idea, but it does show the severe issues with housing in London that people are looking towards old hospitals, just so that they have a bed to sleep in. Would you live here? Let us know down in the comments.
