VICE meets Japanese tattoo masters in the amazing video. Japanese tattoo artists are considered among the best in the world, known for their intricate and stunning work. Human bodies turn into huge canvases for artists to create masterpieces on.

Despite their renown international reputation, within Japan itself tattoos are a huge taboo. This mainly comes from their association with the famous Yakuza gang. As a sign of a dedication to the gang lifestyle, members would often cover themselves head to toe with tattoos. Although this association has lessened over the years, many Japanese people still aren’t keen on getting inked.

The Japanese government has also passed laws requiring tattoo artists to have passed the same exams as doctors, making it almost impossible for most artists to work legally. A strong underground scene still exists though and Vice meets some of the scenes biggest names in this vid. We get to see how they go about creating the tattoos and the risks that they face by practising the art.
