Sometimes a good animation isn’t one that bombards you with colours and crazy characters, it’s one that leaves you feeling sick in your stomach and emotionally battered – so then, we come to Little Bandits by Alex Avagimian. Apparently loosely based on a personal story, the short animation shows us a young boy being pressured by a friend into shooting a bird with an air rifle to prove his bravery. What follows is a harrowing tale of peer pressure and having to own up to your wrongdoings, as we see boy the boy and his friend struggle to deal with the consequences of their actions. Gorgeously animated in a style reminiscent of film like The Iron Giant, this short will ring true with anyone who did something stupid as a kid that they now regret (that’s all of us then, isn’t it…).
