Back in 1969, a band called The Winstons released a single with a B-side called Amen, Brother. Just a six-second drum solo from this song would turn into the most sampled piece of music in history.

This short documentary from Great Big Story explores the origins of what is now known as the Amen break, a loop which has become a staple of hip-hop, electronic and pop music in the years since its original release. Everyone from David Bowie to Slipknot has used the sample, and in the video we meet Lou Flores, aka “Breakbeat Lou,” who is responsible for spreading the sample into the music world through his hip-hop beat compilations.
