Vox has launched a new series titled Darkroom, which will explore iconic historical events through the examination of one photograph. The first video in this series looks into the fatal race to the South Pole between Robert Scott and Roald Amundsen in 1912.

Beginning with the famous photo of Scott and his team at the South Pole, the photograph shows the team next to a tent with a Norwegian flag flying above it – giving them the news that they had been beaten to the Pole. The documentary explains how Scott’s men were so unlucky in the time in which they chose to attempt the expedition, and how the methods they chose ultimately led to their demise.
