Burt Reynolds is making a very meta cinematic comeback in The Last Movie Star. The ageing former movie star plays… well, an ageing former movie star, who is invited to speak at a film festival as the guest of honour. On arrival to the festival he realises it isn’t quite the Cannes or SXSW he was hoping for, and has to confront the fact that his glory days are behind him. The film looks like a heartfelt portrayal of a man finally accepting his age and place in the world, and casting Reynolds is a stroke of genius as it gives the whole project a grounding in reality.
