CalArts student Noor Rasoul’s touching love letter to her Jido (which she tells us means grandpa) will tug at the heartstrings of anyone who has ever spent a prolonged amount of time away from their family. Built around a series of voicemails she received from Jido during her time studying, Rasoul animates both herself and her grandfather as they go through the process of dealing with the emotional hardship of long distances. The animation style is sketchy and hand-drawn, adding to the immensely personal feelings as we hear Jido on one hand berating Rasoul for injuring herself, then in the next sentence wishing her a happy Eid – we’ve all been there haven’t we.
