Ikea introduce us to the “stuff monster” in this charming ad. In it, a huge monster made out of old pieces of furniture gives different nick-nacks to people in the suburbs.

The monster gives people sofas, lamps, chairs and even watering cans. Everyone’s really pleased to be getting these items for free, even if they are second hand. The point of the ad is to encourage people to give away their old furniture or buy second hand in order to cut down on the amount of waste that they create.

Ikea has come under fire in the past for being a big contributor to furniture waste. Their cheaper, self-assemble furniture has ushered in a new era where people will buy more things even if they don’t need it. Ikea try and shake off that negative image with this ad by encouraging people to re-use old furniture. It follows a trend that companies have been making in their ads recently, where they will advise customers to do things that are good for the planet, even if it means buying less of the goods that they sell.
