I Have a Message for You is a powerful documentary by filmmaker Matan Rochlitz about 92 year old holocaust-survivor Klara. Now living in Tel Aviv, Klara tells the story of how she escaped death by jumping from a train that was taking her and her family to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, leaving behind her severely ill father in the process. Haunted by the guilt of leaving her father in this way, it wasn’t till decades later than a random woman in the street stopped her in Tel Aviv to reveal she had been on the same train and had a message from her dying father. The documentary is deeply personal and handles such intensely traumatising subject matter with delicacy and nuance, and the animated segments to the short help to give life and a sense of gravitas to old photographs and news clipping that might have been previously seen as simply 2-dimensional assets.
