Anyone who’s seen any scenes from The Irishman will have been blown away by the fact that Robert De Niro appearers seamlessly as different ages. But how was it done?

It was mostly down to the dedicated hair and make up team on set. There were some scenes where Robert’s character is significantly younger where CGI was used. But, almost all of the scenes where he was made to look older was done purely using make up. The team used a variety of skin grafting, wigs and other techniques to make De Niro look much older than he really is.

In this video, we get a behind-the-scenes look at how it was achieved. It took hours each day to get it just right and make sure that Robert looked totally believable as his older self. The end results are astounding and look totally real. But it wasn’t just Bob who needed to make up as well, lots of other casts members also needed to be “aged” too. That make up team must’ve been knackered by the end of shooting.
