Dance music’s history is a convoluted and twisting story, drawing on influences from disco, funk, reggae and soul – but as this short documentary by Resident Advisor points out, a largely forgotten chapter in its making is the influences the punk rock scene had on dance music’s philosophy and techniques. Starting with the punk explosion of the 70’s, the video draws parallels between early punk’s DIY attitude and disregard for conventional record labels, before the development of the post-punk and no wave movements gave synthesisers a platform that inspired dance musicians for years after. Hardware aside, the punk music scene cannot be ignored for the philosophical influence it has had on modern electronic music and the rave scene in general.
