YouTuber The Nerdwriter looks at how Pixar uses “fake” cameras in their animated films like Toy Story.

If you’re making an animated film, there are lots of things that you don’t need to worry about. Hiring a cameraman is one of the biggest things. Animated films are one of the only things you’ll see in the cinema that don’t need cameras. But in this video, we learn how Toy Story 4 used techniques that simulated camera lenses to give their films a realistic feel.

If you don’t use any cameras, you run the risk of everything feeling too “polished”. Toy Story 4 animated their movies as if they were filmed by a camera. They created different programs that simulated different lens, so that they could use real-life film making techniques in a world without cameras. The craziest thing about it is that almost no one actually realised that they did it, but it had a massive impact on how the final movie looked. The Nerdwriter shines a light on the behind the scenes aspects of animation studios and how they do amazing things without us noticing.
