Designers use a whole host of tricks when designing websites to make the user experience more enjoyable and easy, however the same techniques can be used by UX designers to make things more difficult when they want them to be. This video-essay by The Nerdwriter breaks down these so-called “dark patterns”, the process of putting functions that websites don’t want you to do in a very difficult place to find. To give an example of this, he shows us the steps that need to be taken to delete your Amazon account, and the resulting rabbit hole of links and clicks is just one example of a trick used to confuse users into remaining a customer.
