Great Big Story and Coors Light meet a woman who makes works of art out of ice. Nele Azevedo lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil and sculpts unique pieces that are like no other.
She creates huge outdoor exhibitions made up of hundreds of individual ice sculptures. Collectively, they make up a stunning visual experience. What’s even more interesting is that the art is changing as it melts, making each person’s experience of it truly unique. The melting of the ice is a vital part what makes it special.
Nele makes the point that other forms are art are temporary experiences, so why can’t her art be temporary as well? Seeing a play or listening to a song is a fleeting experience, but it is still incredibly rewarding. Nele’s art feels brief and she wants us to realise that that’s OK. Not all art has to be permanent and it can be enjoyed as a temporary thing. In fact, you’ll probably appreciate it more, knowing that it’ll be the only time that you will see it. You’re literally unable to take it for granted.
