Vox tells us the story of how photography helped us to work out how cats always land on their feet. A question that had stumped humanity for thousands of years was solved with the invention of the camera.


For the first time ever, humans were able to do the impossible: capture motion. This allowed us to get a greater understanding of how and why things moved in the way that they do. One thing scientists were eager to find out more about with the new technique was how cats always land on their feet.

Thought before to be an odd quirk of fate, the camera revealed the genius way that felines move their bodies to avoid falling in painful and dangerous positions. It’s a fascinating video and one that proves that society’s been filming cute cats since the age of Queen Victoria! Some things never change…
