How big is a billion dollars? Spoiler alert: it’s big. It’s a lot. It’s huge cash. YouTuber Tom Scott has created this fascinating video to visualise what a billion dollars looks like in linear terms, and how much more than a million dollars it really is.
The idea is simple. A lot of scientists illustrate the amount of a billion dollars – or at least, how much more than a million dollars it is – by packing it into a box. But humans, Tom argues, struggle to visualise volume. It makes more sense to us if you apply it in a linear way, like distance.
If you stack dollar bills one in front of the other, in a row, you start making a line that’s easier to visualise.
So Tom walks the ‘length’ of a million dollars. It’s basically the length of a football pitch. It’s pretty straightforward.
But the shock comes when he then travels the distance of a billion dollars – which ends up being an hour drive from Essex to the Kent coastline.
