With the build up to the U.S. Open well underway, Serena Williams is the focus of this powerful advert from banking group Chase, the official partner of the competition.

 

 

Following her dramatic return to professional tennis less than a year after giving birth, the advert focuses on Williams’ strength and determination through the use of LL Cool J’s 1990 hit Mama Said Knock You Out.

The song’s first line – “Don’t call it a comeback” – takes on a whole new meaning when it’s said by Williams, possibly as a warning to her competitors in the upcoming tournament.

 

Cutting between scenes of Williams with her daughter and images of her training intensely in a beach location, the advert plays to her strengths and determination, while putting a modern twist on a song that had a whole different meaning at the time of its release.
