When you’re a kid, you might take a spin in a go-kart. But these kids drive full-sized, cars, full throttle. We’re not kidding.
NOWNESS looks into the Junior Bangers, a racing league in the Midlands of England. Kids as young as 11 race against each other in dilapidated old cars, also known as “bangers”. The idea is that the cars are older and slower and can take much more of a beating before the driver is hurt. In this doc we get a POV look into the car and see just how scary it is to race around in one.
Towards the end of the doc, we see one of the cars get hit and completely flip over. Luckily, the driver is OK, but it’s a scary situation to be in. The driver is pretty unfazed and looks like he just wants to get back onto the track and start racing again. It’s a really interesting doc that raises lots of questions about ideas around parenting. Some parents would be horrified to let their kids smash into other cars (or even drive a car) at top speeds. But the children in this video seem wise beyond their years and do take their safety seriously. What do you think? Would you let your child join the Junior Bangers?
