The video for DJ Koze’s hypnotically disco-tinged new single Pick Up is a minimalist but humorously self-aware take on the genre of dance music videos. 90% of the time the video only shows a black screen with subtitles, the text describing either elements of the track itself or what is supposedly happening to people on the dance-floor – “Vocal sample #1”, “brain realizes song consists only of these few elements”, “boys trying to shazam the tune”. With some simple animations and typography to match the lyrics of the vocals, the video takes a simple and funny idea and just runs with it, letting you focus on tapping your feet more than bombarding your eyes with visuals.
