The Oscar winning short film Dear Basketball was created by NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, and is actually an animated visual narrated with a letter Bryant wrote to The Player’s Tribune publication in 2015, announcing his retirement from basketball. Presented in a hand drawn and kind of sketchy way, the animation is beautifully done, as we see a young Bryant practising his techniques and morphing into the professional giant he became. The letter itself is deeply personal, and you can feel Bryant’s real emotional attachment to the sport, but also the sense of growing old and the acceptance that it wasn’t a love that could last forever.
