Dazed & Confused chat to Ebony, the steel drum group that’s been bringing music to Notting Hill Carnival since it was first started way back in 1969.
The carnival champions African and Caribbean culture and is one of the largest street festivals in Europe. Each year, over 2 million people flock to West London for this awesome celebration. In this short documentary, Dazed meets some of the musicians that help create the unique sound and the party atmosphere of Notting Hill Carnival.
We learn the inspiring story of how the steel drum group Ebony got started and how it’s made up of people of all ages and backgrounds. Even the founder’s grandchildren still play in the group, meaning that Ebony spans three separate generations. It’s a moving story that shows us the importance of Carnival and what it means to communities in London. The celebration has changed massively and has grown a lot since first starting 50 years ago. This doc proves that it’s set to grow even more and will certainly still be going strong in another 50 years time.
