Great Big Story speaks to Ólafur Arnalds who shows off his “Ghost Pianos” in this fascinating interview.

After being involved in a car crash which caused him to lose some mobility in his fingers, Ólafur realised that he would no longer be able to play his beloved piano. As a composer, he needed to work out a way to be able to still play music, even if he couldn’t properly use his fingers anymore.

Ólafur then created a software where AI could create complex piano melodies through someone playing just one chord. Ólafur could still play simple chords, but he struggled with playing faster and more complicated melodies. This software allowed him to still create innovative and exciting music, all without the full mobility of his fingers. Not only did his invention help him to play again, but it also showed us the potential of how AI could be used in music in the future. It’s an inspiring story of a man who never gave up on following his passion for music, whatever the circumstances.
